Blue Devils take pair on the road

NORTHFIELD — Stepping outside the division schedule on Monday, the Riverland baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Carleton College junior varsity.

The bats were hot on a cold day in the first game and the visiting Riverland Blue Devils won 10-4. The second game was a bit closer, but the Blue Devils completed the sweep with a 4-3 win.

Four freshmen pitchers toed the rubber for the Blue Devils in the opener. Jon Mittag started and went three innings. Jamie Adams was the first reliever for Riverland and wound up with the win. Dallas Coleman and Brady Klingfus finished up in relief.

"It was a cold day up on the hill and tough for the pitchers as we gave up 11 free passes," Riverland coach Scott Koenigs said. "They got into a few jams with all the walks and then got out of them. They did a nice job of that and it was a learning experience on the mound for the freshmen."

Brad Winkelman and Andrew Schunck each hit solo home runs in the top of the seventh inning for the Blue Devils in the first game.

The late game was a mound win for Adam Carroll, who pitched all seven innings for Riverland. The offense took advantage of seven walks by the Carleton pitchers to take the early lead.

"It was kind more of the same in the late game," Koenigs said. "Carroll struggled with his control in the wind, but he worked out of jams to get the win."

Riverland (26-11) plays host to Rochester Community and Technical College in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Seltz Field.
